Summit School Names Two Board Members
Summit School, Inc. in Elgin is pleased to announce the addition of two new board members to its Board of Directors.
Dr. David Scarpino, Associate Superintendent of Community Unit School District 300 in Carpentersville, and Dr. Joan Fedota, Assistant Dean of National College of Education, National-Louis University in Wheeling, bring a wide range of special education experience to Summit School in their new role as board members.
"Through their lifelong careers in education, our new board members demonstrate a strong commitment and dedication to children," said Robert Hansen, Summit School Chief Executive Officer. "As Summit School looks to its future," added Leo Flanagan, Jr. board chairman, "we look forward to their contributions to our board in developing a successful and vital strategic plan to benefit students".
Dr. Scarpino is a native of Kane County, Illinois, and a graduate of East Aurora High School, in Aurora, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Science at Western Illinois University, a Master of Arts Degree at National College of Education (now National-Louis University), and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Scarpino has been an educator for the past 35 years with emphasis on Educational Leadership and Administration. He has been inspired by members of his family who have dedicated their lives to education, including his four brothers, their spouses, and their combined nine children who are teachers and/or administrators. Dr. Scarpino has served as a teacher at Naperville North High School, Naperville, Illinois; a high school assistant principal and an elementary school principal in Houston, Texas; and a principal and superintendent in Wisconsin before returning back home to Illinois and accepting the position of Associate Superintendent at Community Unit School District 300 in 2006, where he oversees 27 schools, just under 21,000 students and over 3,000 employees.
He and his wife, Jill, have two adopted sons, and reside in Hampshire.
Dr. Fedota’s career in education spans over twenty five years marked by increased leadership in the field of school social work and adult learning. She is highly recognized by professional associations, graduate schools of education, and the Illinois State Board of Education as a knowledgeable speaker, committee member and chair, field supervisor and lecturer.
Her experience includes serving as a school social worker in Chicago suburban school districts prior to her appointment as Assistant Dean of the National College of Education, National Louis University. Her responsibilities include overseeing all operations of the college, including transcript evaluations, certification, clinical placements, program administrative assistance, course scheduling, facilities use and technology. She spearheaded the college’s strategic planning process and helps identify systems and processes for increased efficiencies and improved quality.
Dr. Fedota has earned a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) from Northern Illinois University, a Master of Social Work from Loyola University of Chicago, and Doctorate of Education from National-Louis University. She is past president of the Illinois Association of School Social Workers. She is a member of its board of directors and has held that position since 1981, and is past chair of the Midwest School Social Work Conference. In 2007, Dr. Fedota was named the Midwest School Social Worker of the Year and in 2005, the Illinois School Social Worker of the Year.
Joan and her husband, Steve, reside in Palatine with their two children and are active members of All Saints Lutheran Church.
